An open-plan living and dining transformation in Kottayam that creates a sense of flow and spaciousness without structural changes, using furniture, lighting, and materiality to redefine the zone.
The living and dining area shared the same long, narrow room — a common feature in Kerala apartment layouts. Our first move was to establish distinct zones through rug placement, lighting changes, and a dropped false-ceiling section over the dining area.
The TV wall unit spans the full width of one end wall, combining open display niches, closed cabinets with push-to-open mechanisms, and a central recess for the television. A slim floating shelf runs at skirting level beneath the unit, visually anchoring it to the floor.
The dining zone features a custom 6-seater table in ash-veneer with a brushed-brass base, paired with upholstered chairs and a padded bench along the window wall. Pendant lights above the table — three black-iron cage shades — provide focused task lighting while becoming a design statement of their own.
