Sliding vs. Swing Wardrobes — Which Is Right for Your Bedroom?

The wardrobe question is one we answer several times a week. Sliding or swing? Each has genuine advantages, and the right answer depends on four factors: the size of your bedroom, how you access your clothes, your budget, and how often you rearrange.

Sliding wardrobes are the space-saver's choice. Because the shutters travel along tracks rather than swinging outward, you need zero clearance in front — you can place a bed or dresser right up to the wardrobe face. They also tend to look sleeker, especially in small rooms where a row of handleless panels creates an unbroken, minimal surface.

Swing wardrobes, however, give you unrestricted access. With a sliding wardrobe, only one shutter is ever fully open at a time, which means you cannot see the entire interior simultaneously. Swing shutters open fully, making it easier to survey, select, and organise. They also tend to be more affordable and offer more flexibility for internal shelving configurations.

Our recommendation: choose sliding if your bedroom is under 150 sq.ft. or if your bed is positioned opposite the wardrobe and space is tight. Choose swing if your bedroom is generous, if you have a walk-in area, or if you change clothes quickly and need to see everything at once. In every case, invest in a quality soft-close mechanism — it will be used thousands of times.
